A magnitude 7.1 earthquake has rocked the southern Philippines.

    The quake hit Mindanao at 10.13am local time on Thursday, and recorded a depth of 626km, according to Geoscience Australia.

     

    The nearest city to the quake’s epicentre is Cotabato City which is home to 325,000 people.

    There is no tsunami threat, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

     

    It is unclear if there has been any building damage or injuries.

     

    The Philippines is located within the Ring of Fire, a path along the Pacific Ocean characterised by active volcanoes and frequent earthquakes.

     

    In December last year, a 7.6 magnitude quake hit Mindanao killing a woman and injuring several others.
