On March 21, Iraqis in general and Kurds in particular celebrate Newroz, which is the first day of the Kurdish New Year.
On this day every year, Kurds around the world light fires on mountaintops as part of rituals to celebrate the arrival of spring and the new year.
The word Newroz means in the Kurdish and Persian languages the new day.
In recent years, it has been customary to hold Eid celebrations, where a large number of young people light fires on the top of the mountain and set off fireworks.
Kurdish families in northern Iraq celebrate Eid in the embrace of nature by eating food and organizing dance parties and Kurdish dabke.
In his interview with the Iraqi News Agency (INA), citizen Faiq Gholbi congratulated “the Iraqis in general and the Kurds in particular on the occasion of Newroz holiday,” expressing his hope that security and safety in Iraq will last from north to south.
Citizen Renkin Rengun also congratulated Newroz holiday and said in her interview with (INA): “The holiday is an occasion for family and loved ones to gather and celebrate the arrival of spring and the beginning of the year among the people of the Kurdish nationality,” noting that “her wishes for this year are summed up for continued stability in Iraq.”
Citizen Karwan Hawrami, in turn, said in his interview with (INA): “The Kurdistan region, with its mountains and picturesque nature, embraces millions of celebrants every year, and not only the Kurds, but all Iraqis from the north to the south of the country in an image that expresses the depth of interconnectedness between the people of one people.”
