Former Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari Re-elected as President

Former Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari was elected President of Pakistan after winning a parliamentary vote backed by the current coalition on March 9th. He previously served as president from 2008 to 2013.

The presiding officer, Justice Amir Farooq, announced the victory on live television. Zardari received 411 votes, while nationalist candidate Mehmood Khan Achakzai, who was backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf political party led by jailed leader Imran Khan, received 181 votes.

Presidential elections in Pakistan work by voting in the lower and upper houses of parliament along with four provincial legislative assemblies.

Although the role of the President of Pakistan is mostly a ceremonial job, Zardari is known as an expert in reconciliation and could possibly assist the governing coalition parties in forming an agreement given the state of Pakistan’s dysfunctional economy.

Zardari also commands the armed forces, a key aspect of making or breaking the government in charge.
