Iraq: The government is serious about applying international human rights standards

    INA - BAGHDAD

    Justice Minister Khalid Shwani confirmed on Monday, that the government is serious about implementing its obligations and applying international human rights standards.

    “Shwani met, during his visit to the headquarters of the High Commission for Human Rights in Geneva, the High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations, Volker Türk," according to a statement by the ministry, received by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.

    The two sides discussed developments in the humanitarian file in Iraq, and the accelerated steps of the government of PM Muhammed Shia al-Sudani in this regard, at the legislative and executive levels.

    The Minister of Justice 'as Chairman of the National Committee for Writing International Human Rights Reports' reviewed the committee's role in "following up and implementing Iraq's international obligations, as well as discussing treaty reports before international bodies at the United Nations," included in the statement.

    Shwani stressed, “The Ministry of Justice works within a government strategy to implement the National Human Rights Plan, through its measures taken in the field of human rights in all judicial departments, especially the Iraqi Correctional Department and the Juvenile Correctional Department.”

    In turn, Türk praised "the efforts of the Iraqi government and the Ministry of Justice, their constructive cooperation with the special rapporteurs and the level of transparency in working and applying international human rights standards in prisons."
