The creation of a nuclear umbrella in the European Union instead of the American one may be the subject of discussion at the European level, Katarina Barley, Deputy chairman of the European Parliament and candidate for the EU elections from the ruling Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), said in an interview with Tagesspiegel.

"On the way to the European army, this may also become a topic (for discussion)," she replied to the question of the need for the EU to have atomic warheads.

At the moment, as Barley clarified, the nuclear deterrent forces for Europe are in the hands of Washington. She considered the remark of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to be fair that ensuring them is in the interests of the United States. At the same time, in light of the statements of the former head of the White House, Donald Trump, according to the politician, "this can no longer be counted on."

The deputy chairman of the European Parliament believes that if the United States stops supplying weapons to Ukraine, the European Union will have to take on this responsibility. In order to build a common army in Europe, as Barley added, it is necessary first of all to implement the "Sky Shield" air defense system, as well as coordinate the purchase of weapons.

On February 12, retired Polish General Jaroslaw Krashewski said that it was quite realistic for Poland to obtain nuclear weapons and obtain the status of a nuclear power. According to him, this could happen in the coming years.
