“At least 33 people, mostly children, have died in a landslide in northwestern Colombia”, the country's vice president has announced .
Francia Márquez wrote on the X platform, " I am deeply sorry for the death of 33 people in this tragedy, most of them children, according to initial reports from the place.
Earlier, local authorities reported that at least 23 people were killed in the slide.
The Choco region, which borders the Pacific Ocean and includes a vast tropical forest, has been hit by heavy rains over the past twenty-four hours.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro assured that "all possible assistance to Choco in this terrible tragedy" will be provided.
The police reported that they are working closely with "various emergency and rescue bodies on the road between Meden and kibdo".
Photos posted on social media and television channels showed cars destroyed by mud and landslides.
Search teams, including firefighters, soldiers and local residents, made painstaking efforts through the deep mud and debris in the hope of finding survivors, while relatives stood nearby, some crying heavily, others hugging. Rescuers used stretchers to transport the bodies.
