The Chief Program Coordinator and Head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Iraq, Ali Al-Barir, confirmed today, Sunday, that Iraq has achieved great progress in the field of combating human trafficking, pointing to Iraq’s assistance and international connectivity to monitor human trafficking networks.
Al-Barir told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “Iraq has achieved great achievements in the field of combating human trafficking,” noting that “the Ministry of Interior announced earlier the arrest of a number of human trafficking networks in Baghdad and the provinces.”
He added, "The United Nations is helping Iraq and the regional government in trying to monitor some of the networks that we believe are operating outside Iraq and affecting the smuggling of migrants and human trafficking outside Iraq."
He stated, “In cooperation between the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking and the United Nations, a draft of a new Iraqi law was developed to confront this phenomenon, and it was reviewed in the Ministry of Interior and submitted to the Prime Minister for review and submission in the upcoming legislative sessions for completion,” stressing that it is “a new draft that is
