The president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, expressed “all its support” to the United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, in invoking Article 99 of the United Nations Charter.
“I fully agree with the reasons that led him to request the intervention of the Security Council.
The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is unbearable. Given the risk of an imminent collapse of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, the Security Council must act immediately and impose a humanitarian ceasefire,” the prime minister wrote in a message on X.
Article 99, in fact, allows the secretary general to bring to the attention of the Security Council "any matter which, in his opinion, may jeopardize international peace and security".
Guterres said the war in Gaza had brought “unprecedented destruction and suffering to Israel and the Palestinian territories.”
