EUAMI: Iraqi government has made progress in combating corruption

    The European Union mission in Iraq( EUAMI) confirmed on Thursday, that the Iraqi government has made progress in combating corruption, noting that corruption is a source of organized crime and a drain on many resources.

    The head of the mission, Ambassador Thomas Seiler, said in a speech during a celebration held by the European Union mission on the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day, and attended by the reporter of the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “The first meeting I held with Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, in which we agreed to proceed with completing the principle of We have preceded in improving and strengthening the procedures of the government, parliament, and relevant institutions in the field of combating corruption and financial files, as well as with civil organizations, so that Iraqi society can enjoy greater prosperity, security, and more fair opportunities,” indicating that “progress has been made in this regard."

    He added, "We have many areas of cooperation in the economy, banking, and financial transactions, but one of the areas in which we agreed to cooperate fully is the rule of law and its enforcement, transparency, legal legislation, and other areas that must be taken into account," noting, "We are cooperating to move forward in strengthening... The rule of law and the state of judiciary."

    Seiler stated, "We agreed at the international level that the Iraqi government respects agreements and implements special obligations in the field of combating corruption, as well as the national element related to the rule of law to build society and strengthen the societal system in which the law prevails, because a system that respects the rule of law is the best system for investment, economic prosperity, and societal prosperity," He pointed out that "corruption is a complex economic, social and financial problem that affects all countries in the region and the world we have fought corruption in Europe for a long time and reached high levels."

    He stated that "even in Europe nothing is perfect and there is more that we must do for us, the fight against corruption is not only a matter of equality, but rather fairness and the rule of law," explaining that "if there is an effective fight against corruption, this matter will lead to getting rid of poverty."
