Prime Minister Muhammed S. Al-Sudani received on Monday, a phone call from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

They discussed enhancing bilateral relations between the friendly countries and staying updated on regional and global developments, "particularly in the aftermath of the Zionist aggression in the Gaza Strip," according to a statement by the PM Media Office, received by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.

PM Al-Sudani pointed out that the region is currently at a critical juncture, with the potential for an escalation and widening of the conflict. He highlighted "that the events of October 7 were the outcome of years of injustice, violence, disregard for international agreements, and the denial of the basic rights of the Palestinian people to live in safety."

He asserted "Iraq's steadfast and principled stance on the Palestinian right, stressing the crucial requirement for a responsible stance from the international community and major powers. This is necessary to address the humanitarian crisis, prevent the escalation of the conflict, safeguard energy supplies, and prevent the addition of another conflict to the already existing wars and crises."

Al-Sudani underscored the urgency of establishing secure corridors for the delivery of humanitarian and medical assistance to the two million Palestinians enduring dire living conditions.

In turn, Prime Minister Meloni conveyed Italy's concern regarding the situation in Gaza and expressed her government's commitment to initiatives aimed at de-escalation.

PM Meloni commended the diligent work of the Iraqi security services in preserving security and stability and highlighted the strategic partnership between Iraq and Italy. She also extended an invitation for the Prime Minister to visit Rome, which he graciously accepted and promised to fulfill at the earliest opportunity.
