The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs clarified the number of licensed foreign labors, while confirming that the work permit is granted exclusively to professions that are not available inside the country.
"The ministry gave an opportunity, after obtaining the approval of the Minister of Labor, Ahmed Al-Asadi, to labors who entered Iraqi territory directly, especially Syrian workers, by reviewing the ministry to obtain a work permit after completing the legal procedures," said the ministry's spokesman, Najm Al-Eqabi, to the Iraqi News Agency - INA.
Al-Eqabi explained, "The work permit will not be granted to any profession, but is issued to professions that are not available inside the country, because according to the law, 50% of the national workforce must be employed, corresponding to 50% of foreign employment, especially investment companies contracting with the state. The number of licensed foreign labors does not exceed 100,000."
"There are many unlicensed foreign labors in the country, who entered through a tourist or religious visit visa and go to the labor market, and there are other violations, including the expiry of the work permit that is granted for a full year, and its non-renewal," he pointed out, noting that "there are joint committees with the Ministry of Interior, which is concerned with this file."
