Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein stressed today, Wednesday, preventing the recurrence of acts offensive to Islam and the Holy Qur’an, while Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen confirmed his country’s government’s rejection of anti-Islamic acts.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "Deputy Chairman of the Council of Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein received today a phone call from Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen.

Hussein expressed "the condemnation and denunciation of the government and people of Iraq for the burning and desecration of the Noble Qur'an and the Iraqi flag in Denmark," noting that "freedom of expression should not affect other freedoms, and that such actions contradict human dignity and rights."

He called on "the Danish government to prevent the recurrence of these offensive and repeated acts against Islam and the Holy Qur'an, and to confront such provocative acts, which incite violence and fuel hatred, racism and extremism, and which cannot be included within the scope of freedoms," welcoming "the decision of the United Nations General Assembly to encourage dialogue and tolerance between religions and cultures in confronting hate speech.

He referred to "the keenness of the Iraqi government and people on the security and safety of diplomatic missions residing in Baghdad, including the Danish mission, and “stressing” respect for freedom of expression in accordance with constitutional and legal standards, in a manner that does not constitute an offense to religions or freedom of belief."

For his part, the Danish Foreign Minister expressed his country's condemnation of this act, stressing that "the Danish government strongly rejects such anti-Islamic acts, and that it does not support or condone in any way the anti-Islamic views expressed by the person concerned during this incident."

He renewed "the Danish government's commitment to protecting the Iraqi embassy in Copenhagen."
