The Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Haitham Al Ghais stressed the importance of Iraq's role as an active member of OPEC and ministerial committees, as well as its contribution to stabilizing global oil markets.
"the Secretary-General OPEC" Haitham Al-Ghais and his accompanying delegation visited today Al-Sha'ab Hall in Baghdad," said the ministry of oil in a statmeant, received by the Iraqi news agency(INA), noting that "Al-Ghais toured Al-Sha'ab Hall, accompanied by the Director General of the Oil Marketing Company "SOMO" Ammar Abdullah. He also listened to an explanation given by the Ministry's spokesman - Assem Jihad about the history of this hall and the Ministry's efforts in the process of rehabilitation, development and preservation of this historical edifice.”
Al-Ghais explained, according to the statement, that "OPEC is preparing to celebrate, in cooperation with the Ministry of Oil, the 60th anniversary of its founding in Baghdad, which hosted the first founding meeting in the Al-Sha'ab Hall in 1960," noting that "the celebration was postponed more than once, due to COVID-19.."
He pointed to "The importance and value of the meetings that took place with the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil Hayan Abdul-Ghani," stressing "the necessity to strengthen the joint role in the stability of global oil markets."
He stressed that "the OPEC agreement" is one of the most important historical decisions taken by the members of the organization to face the various challenges that the global oil markets were exposed to, pointing out that "this agreement has contributed to addressing the challenges and difficulties facing the global markets."
He continued, "One of the most important goals of OPEC is to achieve stability and balance between supply and demand," lauding "the initiative of the Ministry of Oil to preserve Al-Sha’ab Hall in Baghdad, which represents a symbol and historical value for Iraq and the organization."
It’s to be mentioned that Al-Shaab Hall is the site of OPEC’s founding, and it will host the celebration of the Organization’s 60th Anniversary, which will take place later this year.
