President Rashid stresses the need to find executive and legislative measures to protect water security

    President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid stressed on Sunday, the need to find executive and legislative measures to protect water security, while stressing the importance of adopting modern irrigation methods.

    The Presidency of the Republic said, in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the President of the Republic, Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, chaired today Sunday, in the Baghdad Palace, an expanded meeting devoted to the water file in the country, in the presence of both the Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab Abdullah, and new ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Iraq Johannes Lindert Sande, a representative of the World Bank, and the director of the World Bank office in Baghdad, Muhammad Al-Ani," noting that "extensive discussions took place among the attendees centered on addressing water scarcity and the use of modern methods and means in irrigation and supporting efforts to enhance Iraq's water share."

    Rashid stressed, "The importance of the New York Water Conference, which is to be held soon, and the need to raise Iraq's water position and the problems resulting from water scarcity and climate change," stressing "the importance of the need for serious and practical steps to reach an agreement with neighboring countries in order to share the damage and provide a fair share of water."

    The statement stressed the need to find effective executive procedures and the necessary binding legislation to protect water and agricultural security in the country, and the need to start a practical dialogue with neighboring countries in this regard, pointing to the importance of caring for water resources in Iraq and preserving them through serious and effective measures, especially since we are among the countries. most affected by climate change, drought and desertification."

    It added, "The water file is a vital file, and it must have a priority that requires the cooperation of all institutions, governmental departments, and non-governmental agencies," stressing "spreading community awareness in rationalizing water consumption, stopping waste in it, and ending abuses on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and their branches,"

    Rashid pointed out, "The importance of upgrading the agricultural methods used in the country by adopting modern irrigation methods, and providing the water share for the marsh areas, in order to preserve water resources and ensure their availability for future generations."
    The attendees emphasized the importance of the President's participation in the Water Conference for Sustainable Development to be held in New York.

    "Iraq reached an understanding during a meeting held with the Iranian Energy Minister about exchanging information and setting up measurement stations on border rivers," said Minister of Water Resources Aoun Diab Abdullah, according to the statement.
