Iraqi National Security Service-INSS announced on Wednesday the arrest of 24 accused from extremist religious movements.

"After receiving confirmed intelligence information about some suspicious members who are trying to target and threaten societal peace in conjunction with the Arbaeen pilgrimage, INSS detachments in all governorates of Iraq began forming special task forces to curb these extremist activities and arrest their promoters, according to judicial arrest warrants," INSS stated in a statement, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

The statement pointed out, "The security operation resulted in the arrest of 24 accused in six governorates (Baghdad, Basra, Maysan, Babil, Diwaniyah and Holy Karbala), as hundreds of leaflets were seized with them calling for incitement against religious references and threatening community peace."

"All the arrestees and the seized items have been referred to the competent judicial authorities to take the necessary measures against them,” the statement added.
