Italy began a campaign to vaccinate against monkeypox, with an increase in the number of infections, in conjunction with warnings issued by health authorities around the world about the shortage of vaccines against the disease.

The Italian Ministry of Health reported that Italy had recorded 545 cases of monkeypox.

Its vaccination campaign began after more than a month of similar steps for countries that recorded higher numbers of infections, including the United States, Britain and Spain.

Spallanzani Hospital in Rome said in a statement that it would provide the first doses of the vaccine.

Spalanzani Hospital said it will start vaccinating 200 people from Monday, in addition to receiving 600 reservation requests.

The hospital stated that the vaccine used is Genius, an anti-smallpox vaccine produced by the Bavarian Nordic Company and approved by the European Medicines Agency for immunization against monkeypox.

Next Thursday, vaccination operations will also begin in Milan, the financial capital of Italy.
