The Ministry of Electricity set on Wednesday, a date for Iraq to dispense with imported gas, while warning that cutting off its supplies from Iran will affect processing in the summer.

"Iraq has two contracts with neighboring Iran since 2017, to supply 35 million m³ of gas per day, from May to October of each year for the central regions and the South, as their total amounts to 70 million," said the Director of the Fuel Center in the Ministry of Electricity, Saad Freih Jassim, to Al-Iraqiya News TV, followed up by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.

He added, "Iraq has debts a must to be payable as a result of importing gas, amounting to one billion and $640 million, as paying them will ensure the continuation of flows," noting that "under the current situation, Iraq needs 6-10 years to dispense with Iranian gas, until the Ministry of Oil is able to complete its projects and povide Iraq's needs via free gas in the Okaz and Al-Mansuriya areas, as well as completing its investments for associated gas."

"Iraq's use of gas stations came for their efficiency, and going towards fossil fuels reduces the efficiency of those stations," he explained, noting that "the delegation of the Ministry of Electricity visited Iran last April, specifically on the 27th, and agreed with its officials to start paying the debts within a month, as the deadline expired and we did not start paying because it is related to the financial allocations."

Jassim warned that "the interruption of the current Iranian gas flows will mean a loss of 8000 megawatts of energy produced in Iraq and will greatly affect the processing in the summer. emergency support,"
