European Union officials said yesterday that the 27-nation bloc needs to continue to focus on vaccination campaigns, Covid testing and surveillance as it emerges from the "acute" phase of the Covid-19 epidemic.
"We are entering a new phase of the pandemic, as we move from a state of emergency to a more sustainable management of COVID-19. But nevertheless, we must remain vigilant," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement.
"We know how to move forward on this path. We need to increase vaccination, booster doses and testing (...) and continue to coordinate our response to the epidemic in the European Union," she added.
Brussels announced that the bloc's countries should take advantage of the currently low levels of infections to "strengthen surveillance and health care systems" before a possible new wave next fall, recommending increased doses and tracing of strains to discover new mutants.
She said there was no longer a need to focus surveillance on mass reporting of all COVID-19 infections, "but instead that reliable estimates should be obtained."
And last fall witnessed the easing of restrictions related to “Covid” or their complete reduction in all countries of the bloc, which raised its production of vaccines to between 3 to 4 billion doses annually.

The Commission stressed that it wants to maintain the role of the bloc as a major force in the production of vaccines in the long term to help in the face of future health crises.
