Following a phone conversation between him and the pope, Zelensky tweeted that he would “appreciate the Holy See’s mediation of an end to human suffering” in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president also announced that he had informed His Holiness of the difficult humanitarian situation and the closure of humanitarian corridors by Russian forces, thanking the Pope for his “prayers for Ukraine and peace.”

In a video message broadcast on the night of Tuesday-Wednesday, Zelensky said, “I have asked (the Pope) to come to our country at this very important moment.”

“I think we can organize this important visit, which is very supportive to all of us, to every Ukrainian,” he added.

Zelensky saidTalks between his country and Russia are confrontational but are moving forward as the West plans to announce more sanctions on the Kremlin amid a deepening humanitarian crisis.

“We continue to work at various levels to encourage Russia to move towards peace,” he said. “Ukrainian representatives participate in the talks that take place almost every day. They are very difficult and sometimes confrontational … But we are moving forward step by step.“
