Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed on Monday the need to hold a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in any format in order to stop the war in Ukraine.

“I believe that without this meeting it is impossible to fully understand what they are prepared to do in order to stop the war,” Zelensky said in an interview with the Sospilne news website.

Zelensky had previously announced that “without negotiations we cannot end the war” and called for a summit with Putin, but his two statements carried a character of extreme urgency.

Several sessions of Ukrainian-Russian negotiations have been held since the start of the Russian military operation against Ukraine on February 24.

In addition, Zelensky confirmed, on Monday evening, during an interview with a Ukrainian public media, that any “settlement” in the framework of negotiations with Russia to end the conflict will be submitted to a popular referendum in Ukraine, according to Agence France-Presse.

“I explained to all the negotiating groups: When you talk about all these changes that will be included in a possible agreement and may be historic, we will submit them to a referendum,” he told the Sospilne news website. And he added, “The people should have their say in certain forms of settlements. The content of (these potential settlements) depends on our discussions” with the Russians.

Zelensky spoke at length about the pivotal issue of NATO, which he recently admitted that his country would not be able to join.

We all realized that, he said. We are not accepted (in the alliance) because they (the members of the alliance) are afraid of Russia. Thats all about it. We must calm down and say: “Well, we must give other security guarantees.”

He stressed that “there are countries in NATO who want to be guarantors of (Ukraine) security and are ready to do everything the alliance should do if we are members of it. I think this is a normal settlement.”
