The Ministry of Environment announced today, Friday, submitting a projects to address 670 square kilometers of unexploded ordnance, while identifying the main cause of mine victims.
The Director General of the Mine Affairs Department at the ministry, Dhafer Mahmoud Khalaf, said in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "The remaining area of pollution is about 2,700 square kilometers, for various types of war remnants of mines, cluster remnants of war and explosive devices, from north to south," noting "Work continues with international organizations, in addition to the national effort, represented by the Ministries of Defense and Interior, in order to secure all regions of the country."
He clarified, "During the past year, there were about 52 victims who fell as a result of war remnants," noting that” mine casualties occurred due to non-compliance with warning signs and awareness-raising campaigns conducted by the Ministry ".
He emphasized that "The ministry submitted projects to the Ministry of Planning to treat more than 670 square kilometers of waste, and we wait the official approvals."
