Community Police Directorate of the Ministry of Interior revealed Wednesday coordination with social media departments to close the electronic blackmail pages, while confirming that these pages contributed to promoting suicide and drug use.
The Director of Community Police, Brigadier General Ghaleb Al-Attiyah, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "there is continuous monitoring and follow-up to the issue of electronic extortion practiced on social networking sites," adding that, "there is coordination with the departments of social networking sites to close the pages that work to blackmail citizens against which a judicial order has been issued."
He added, "These pages contributed to spreading and promoting societal crimes, increasing their numbers and influencing individuals, in addition to promoting drug abuse, suicide and other societal crimes."
He pointed out that "the community police owns a database on those pages and works with security and governmental institutions, such as the Media and Communications Authority and the Ministry of Communications, to follow up and close them," stressing that "the outcome of these sites in the country exceeds 100 social media sites."
The Director of Community Police, Brigadier General Ghaleb Al-Attiyah, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "there is an increase in the number of suicides, especially among young people," noting that "the reasons are many, including economic and represented by unemployment, as well as violence, family disintegration and drugs, as well as electronic extortion, especially among girls. "
He continued, "Social media play a negative role in the issue of suicide, as some of them explain how to learn suicide," noting that "the community police play their role to reduce suicide through education and dissemination of awareness programmes, especially as they intensify their efforts with the imminent announcement of exam results, where they abound. There are suicides."
