The Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army for Operations, Lieutenant-General Qais Al-Muhammadawi, announced today, Thursday, the work to build a wall on the western border with Syria, while sending a message of reassurance to the Iraqis.
The Joint Border Command exerted tremendous efforts, under the supervision of the Army’s Chief of Staff for two years to secure the borders, especially the western ones with Syria,” noting that “the security systems there are much better than before, whether in regard of the administrative, fortifications, or monitoring aspects , as well as what is related to drones, balloons and thermal cameras, Al-Muhammadawi told The Iraqi News Agency (INA).
He added, "There is an intention to build a wall on the borders, but the existing fortifications provide the necessary security," stressing that "there is work to establish a front line from the army forces only y on the borders for to secure and fortify the border areas."
Al-Muhammadawi pointed out that " forces from the Interior and Defense ministries are locating there in large numbers and are fully supplied and equipped with the all the needed systems," noting that "the visit of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to the borders was important, in addition to the continuous visits of the field commanders and all the high- level taken measures .”
Al-Muhammadawi assured the Iraqis that "the security forces are present at the borders, and the Iraqi authorities are conducting the security checking for the displaced families who are willing to return."
