Baghdad-INA
The head of the Safety Management Department at Baghdad Airport, Munther Abdullah Mahmoud, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that “Iraqi Airways was a productive and achieving good revenues by providing services to travelers through its planes but stopping flying to Europe and giving ground services, including catering and maintenance, to companies outside Iraq, greatly affected the financial aspect of the Iraqi Airways”
He explained that "the balance of the Airways has become unable to pay salaries and allowances, as well as perform maintenance operations for some of the damaged aircraft," noting that "the demands of the employees included raising entitlements, reforming the system completely, and fighting corruption through contracts and people."
Mahmoud added that "The strike came as a measure to put pressure on the officials and to diagnose and remedy the defect, especially since many stops and demands preceded carrying out the strike, but without results."
He also indicated that " The salaries of Iraqi pilots are very little compared to what other pilot receives in other countries," explaining that "the demands included activating the Iraqi Airways law, and applying international laws with the international bodies according to basis and standards."
He pointed out that "the Minister of Transport attended last Thursday to the strike site and listened to the demands, and it was agreed to form a committee to discuss them," stressing that "air traffic is normal and the pilots made their utmost effort to compensate the Airways for the losses that occurred during the strike."
