US President Joe Biden announced new sanctions against Russia, while indicating that the United States will support its military presence in Europe.
Biden said in a speech today, Tuesday, that "Russia has begun its last measures to invade Ukraine," announcing the imposition of new sanctions on Russia targeting its sovereign debt and its elite.
He added: "Our sanctions against Russia will hit the American economy, but we will protect it," noting that "the United States will strengthen its military presence in Europe, but we do not intend to go to war with Russia."
Biden added, "We want to assure that we will protect every inch of the territory of NATO countries," stressing that "the United States will continue to provide Ukraine with defensive weapons."
He pointed out that "Putin's speech indicates the absence of any desire on the part of Russia to dialogue," noting that "we still maintain our determination to engage in diplomatic work with Russia."
