KDP: We did not reach understandings with the PUK to present a candidate

A member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party - KDP, Majid Shankali confirmed on Monday, that the party has submitted the nomination of Rebar Ahmed for the post of President of the Republic to the Parliament since last week, while indicating that no understandings have been reached with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan - PUK to nominate a consensual candidate for the post.

”The nomination of Rebar Ahmed by the party for the post of President of the Republic means that he has crossed the phase of excluding the leader in the KDP, Hoshyar Zebari from running by a decision of the Federal Court," said Shankali to Al-Iraqiya News TV, followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

He added, "The new candidacy means that the KDP is determined to proceed to the Peace Palace, the headquarters of the presidency, and the nomination confirms that the KDP wants to reach the post because it has an electoral entitlement while respecting the opinions of the rest of the parties in light of the honorable competition that was guaranteed by the democratic process,"

”The KDP submitted the nomination of Rebar Ahmed after the Parliament opened the nomination for the second time last week," Shankali confirmed.

He pointed out that "the KDP has continuous understandings with the Sadrist bloc and the Alliance of Sovereignty within the framework of the Triple Alliance, and it deals with recent developments, and certainly there is an insistence on passing the national majority project by first naming the Speaker of the parliament, the President of the Republic, then the candidate of the Sadrist bloc and the Triple Alliance for the post of Prime Minister,"

”The KDP did not reach any understandings with the PUK to present a candidate, and PUK insist on its candidate, Barham Salih, and we believe that we have the eligibility according to the electoral eligibility to nominate for the position,” he included.
