MOWR confirms the role of the International Community in supporting Iraq to obtain its water rights

    The Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, stressed the role of the international community to support Iraq in obtaining its water rights, stressing the need to share the damage in difficult periods with the riparian countries.
     
    "Within the activities of the (Mediterranean Dialogues Forum 2021), the Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, participated in the high-level session entitled (Clean Energy for All: Opportunities for Cooperation in the Middle East)", MOWR said on Saturday, in a statement, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
     
    During the Forum's events Al-Hamdani stressed "The need to address the challenges of climate change and its adverse effects on water resources, represented by the increasing periods of drought, widespread desertification, rising temperatures and lack of rain, increasing energy demand and population growth, which requires that the riparian countries  should share the damage in difficult periods, build bridges of cooperation, exchange data and reach international understandings and agreements that are binding within the framework of international law and norms to guarantee the rights of countries, especially those located in the mouths of rivers, to ensure their access to water.”
     
    He also stressed "The importance of the international community's role in supporting Iraq to obtain its water rights, in light of the mentioned challenges and achieving sustainable development goals in light of the interdependence between water, food and energy."
