UNSC condemns assassination attempts to PM Al-Kadhimi

    United Nations Security Council – UNSC condemned on Monday, the attempted assassination of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, while stressing the need to hold the perpetrators of these heinous terrorist acts, their organizers, financiers and sponsors accountable, and bring them to justice.
     
    “The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attempt to assassinate Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi on November 7, 2021,” said UNSC in a statement, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
     
    According to the statement, the members expressed their comfort that the Prime Minister was not injured in the attack, reiterating their support for Iraq's independence, sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, democratic process, and prosperity.
     
    The members also reiterated that "terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security," stressing "the need to hold the perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors of these heinous terrorist acts accountable, and bring them to justice,"
     
    They urged all states, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to actively cooperate with the Government of Iraq and all other relevant authorities in this regard.
     
    The members of the Security Council noted that any terrorist acts are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever and whenever they were committed and by whomever committed, noting the need for all states to combat threats to international peace and security through terrorist acts, by all means in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law,”
