Sudan PM Hamdok under House Arrest

    The Sudanese Prime Minister’s Office announced today, Monday that Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has been placed under house arrest.
     
    Sky News quoted the office as saying that "Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok has been placed under house arrest."
     
    "The Sudanese Prime Minister will issue a statement soon," he added.
     
    In the early morning hours, the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, witnessed a heavy military deployment, coinciding with a campaign of arrests of Sudanese political figures and party leaders.
     
    Media outlets reported that "A military force arrested a number of ministers in Hamdok's government, including Minister of Information Hamza Balloul, Minister of Industry Ibrahim Al-Sheikh and Minister of Cabinet Affairs Khaled Omar Youssef, in addition to political and party figures and civilian members of the Sovereign Council. ".
     
    The family of the media advisor to the Prime Minister stated that a military force had arrested Counselor Faisal Muhammad Saleh after storming his house.
     
    The Secretary of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, Ali Al-Rih Al-Sanhouri, was also arrested.
     
    For its part, the Sudanese Ministry of Information said that "members of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of the civilian component were arrested," adding that "a number of ministers of the transitional government were arrested by joint military forces."
     
    Roads and bridges were closed in Khartoum, and major areas of the Sudanese capital were separated from each other.
