The Ministry of Oil announced Saturday, that Iraq is adopting a strategy to support green energy projects and gas investment.
A statement of the ministry received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) stated that "Oil Minister Ihsan Abdul Jabbar Ismail, confirmed while participating through the electronic platform in the energy transformation workshop organized by the International Energy Organization, the Iraqi government and the ministry's keenness to support green energy projects by implementing major plans and projects in the field of gas investment associated with oil operations and working to reduce hydrocarbon emissions and increase electricity production projects by using alternative energy and reduce the use of heavy fuels."
The Minister of Oil added according to the statement that "Iraq has taken practical steps to gradually shift towards green and renewable energy”, pointing out “the government and the ministry's support for investments in gas sector and turning it into useful energy by adopting a clear strategy by contracting with international companies specialized in this field in the provinces of Basra, Maysan and Dhi Qar and the establishment of Basra Gas company, as well as signing an agreement with Total French company for a series of projects ,in addition to other projects carried out by the ministry including the investment of (2600) million standard cubic feet per day within the plans of the Ministry of Oil to invest the associated gas from the fields of the southern provinces, which is hoped to be completed before 2026.”
He said."The second important focus of Iraq's plans is to add (12 kilowatts) to the national electricity system through the use of alternative energy (solar) by contracting with leading international companies in this sector, and working to switch to the use of gas in the operation of plants instead of heavy fuels to reduce emissions and preserve the environment, which is one of the priorities of the Iraqi government."
"Iraq adheres to international agreements and conventions that emphasize compliance with environmental, health and climate standards, seek the best means to achieve these goals and work to develop them in order to preserve the environment and human health and help achieving sustainable development," the Oil Minister said.
"The workshop, organized by the International Energy Organization (IEA), ministers, experts in the field of international energy, specialists and research and scientific centers, discussed the economic aspects of the transition to alternative energy and the technical aspects of technology, plans and studies related to this concern," he said.
