President Barham Salih stressed today, Sunday, the importance of developing a population policy that achieves the goals of sustainable development, while stressing the need to support women and stop cases of violence against them.
The Presidency of the Republic said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the President of the Republic, Barham Salih, received, today, Sunday, at the Peace Palace in Baghdad, a delegation of the United Nations Population Fund headed by the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund Ip Petersen." , noting that "during the meeting, they discussed relations between Iraq and the United Nations Population Fund, through the relevant ministries and government institutions, and the importance of developing and strengthening them with regard to population development."
The President of the Republic stressed that "the country has faced the challenge of terrorism and the resulting internal displacement crises, and social and demographic consequences," noting "the importance of providing support to the displaced who are still in displacement camps and seeking for their voluntary return to ensure a decent life and an adequate living situation."
He pointed out to "the importance of setting a population policy that achieves the sustainable development goals, based on the population, especially the youth, who constitute the largest proportion of the population, and represents an important workforce that should be utilized and provided with opportunities to engage in the labor market," noting at the same time "the need to support women and stop cases of violence to which she is subjected and to guarantee her full rights.
