The Parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee confirmed that Iraq loses 100,000 dunums of its lands annually due to desertification, while revealing a tendency to build new dams.
Committee member MP Ali Al-Budairi told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "There is a report issued by the United Nations, which shows that Iraq annually loses 100,000 dunums of its agricultural land due to desertification," stressing that "the issue of desertification has no real treatments so far." .
He explained that "desertification led to a rise in temperatures to reach very high rates, due to the lack of vegetation cover and the elimination of green spaces in the country."
Al-Budairi added that "meetings are continuing between the committee and the Ministry of Water Resources, especially in summer times, to discuss the issue of water scarcity," stressing "the importance of having high coordination between the executive and legislative authorities to secure water requirements, especially for the southern governorates."
