The Southern Environment Department revealed, today, Thursday, that 2,000 people with cancer have been registered in Basra annually due to oil burners.
The director general of the environment of the south, Walid Hamid, said in a statement to Al-Iraqiya Al-Akhbariya, which was followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The oil burners release many of the toxic gases extracted that lead to direct injuries to lung cancer and other types of it."
He added, "According to the statistics received from the Ministry of Health, they confirm that 2000 cases of cancer are recorded annually in Basra due to these burners."
He explained, "It is not possible to control air pollution unless the oil companies extracting it adhere to the approved environmental and health systems and controls," calling on "the Ministry of Oil and companies to observe health standards."
