The parliamentary oil committee confirmed on Wednesday that the development of associated gas is a government priority to boost the economy, while the Ministry of Oil required oil extracting companies to exploit associated gas and reduce environmental pollution.
Sabah Sobhi, a member of the committee, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The development and investment of associated gas is one of the government priorities approved by the parliament, with the aim of reducing imports and strengthening the national economy, in addition to reducing environmental pollution."
"The committee is following up on the efforts of the Ministry of Oil in investing in associated gas, as the ministry has made remarkable progress, especially through the recent licensing rounds, which included a number of gas fields," he said.
"The Ministry of Oil has stipulated that oil extracting companies exploit associated gas and prevent it from being burned during extraction operations, which contributed to reducing the import of gas from abroad," he said.
He added, "The dependence of the government and the ministry on gas extracted from oil companies has reflected positively on the electricity sector."
