The Arab League condemned, on Thursday, targeting Merowe Dam, Sudan, considering it a new violation of the principles of international law and international humanitarian law.

"The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, condemned targeting vital civilian facilities in the city of Merowe and the severe damage to electricity transformers from Merowe Dam to the national grid that supplies several Sudanese states with electricity, in a new violation of international humanitarian law that prohibits targeting civilian infrastructure," according to a statement by the Arab League - followed by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.

Information indicated that "the drone attack on the Merowe Dam hydroelectric station caused a power outage in the cities of Merowe, Ad-Dabba, Atbara, Dongola, and Omdurman, as well as various areas in Port Sudan. It paralyzed the affected cities, threatening to exacerbate the deteriorating living crisis."

For his part, Counselor Jamal Rushdi, spokesman for the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, explained that "the determination to flagrantly violate the principles of international laws and international humanitarian law in Sudan, destroy Sudanese infrastructure, and target civilians and vital civilian facilities in the country, complicates the political scene and distances the opportunities for peace that the Sudanese people, the first to be affected by these violations, are looking for."

Rushdi stressed the Arab League's firm position towards supporting the Sudanese state, its national institutions, infrastructure, and the rights of the Sudanese people in all their spectrums, recalling the need to fully adhere to the decisions of the Jeddah Agreement for a humanitarian ceasefire.
