Ali Al-Moayyed, Chairman of Communications and Media Commission-CMC, invited Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), to visit Iraq in a move aimed at strengthening international cooperation and advancing Iraq's digital transformation agenda.
Al-Moayyed underscored the critical importance of the ITU’s strategic support in Iraq’s ongoing efforts to modernize its telecommunications infrastructure and align with global technological trends.
According to a statement issued by CMC , received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the meeting between Al-Moayyed and Bogdan-Martin took place on the sidelines of Iraq's participation in the Future Summit in New York. Discussions centered on Iraq's institutional efforts in key areas such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, cyber security, electronic payments, and banking sector reforms, all of which are essential to integrating with the global digital economy.
A focal point of the dialogue was Iraq's persistent digital divide and strategies to close this gap. Both parties explored the potential of universal service projects and the recent advancements within Iraq's telecommunications and information technology sectors, with Al-Moayyed reiterating the need for enhanced international cooperation to achieve comprehensive digital inclusivity.
Al-Moayyed highlighted Iraq's unique demographic advantage, particularly its dynamic and tech-savvy youth population, and stressed the necessity of the ITU’s involvement in fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in Iraq. He called for a targeted focus on capacity-building initiatives, particularly in training human resources and supporting the development of the private sector and start-ups, which he identified as pivotal to Iraq's digital future.
In response, Bogdan-Martin expressed the ITU’s full and unwavering commitment to supporting Iraq’s digital evolution.
She praised the Communications and Media Commission 's significant achievements in enhancing Iraq’s telecommunications and IT sectors and reaffirmed the ITU’s readiness to provide continued technical and regulatory guidance. Her remarks emphasized the ITU's role in shaping policies, refining regulatory frameworks, and closely monitoring Iraq's technological progress to ensure sustainable and secure digital growth.
Moreover, Bogdan-Martin assured Al-Moayyed of the ITU’s ongoing collaboration, with her direct team maintaining active communication with the Authority's team to ensure the success of the joint initiatives.
