The second Baghdad International Drug Control Conference's primary objectives and anticipated outcomes were listed by the Ministry of Interior on Monday.
"The Ministry of Interior, after adopting the anti-drug file as the most important file in the ministry, has planned one of its items to establish regional and international cooperation because drugs are transnational crimes and there are local groups dealing with international groups," Major General Khaled al-Muhanna, director of the Ministry of Interior's relations and information department, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
"The first credit was given to Iraq in adopting and establishing a joint international-regional cooperation system," Al-Muhanna continued, emphasizing that "neighboring countries have a real desire to support Iraq because they face similar problems, some of which are more serious and complex than Iraq's."
The first conference was held last year after the countries expressed a desire for this kind of gathering. He continued, "There was an interaction and many results that quickly came to fruition and resulted in many achievements at the local and international levels."
Noting that "the most important expected outputs will be the strengthening of cooperation, and a permanent office in Iraq to transfer data and expertise," he emphasized that "the second Baghdad conference seeks to strengthen this cooperation and to have a real joint action to confront the threat of drugs."
The proceedings of the second Baghdad International Drug Control Conference began on Monday morning with remarks by Prime Minister Mohammed ShIA al-Sudani.
