The Ministry of Environment announced today, Sunday, legal actions against non-compliant factories, including fines and closures, while specifying conditions for establishing industrial projects.

Jalil Hussein Salman, Director of the Department of Monitoring and Evaluation of Industrial and Service Activities at the ministry, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "Iron and steel factories, carbon oxides, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and others, release gases that have significant environmental impacts. These emissions affect air quality and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, thereby influencing climate change." He emphasized that "companies and production facilities under the ministry's jurisdiction play a role in air quality degradation through their emissions."

Salman added that "the Ministry of Environment has stipulated that projects must adhere to specific site criteria to ensure they do not impact residential areas and communities. Additionally, they require the implementation of controls on gas and particulate emissions before granting environmental approval for these projects."

He continued, stating that "the ministry will monitor the performance of all activities after their construction and commencement of operations. In case of any violations of environmental regulations, appropriate legal actions will be taken, starting with a warning, followed by financial penalties if the violation is not rectified. These measures may escalate to temporary closure if necessary."
