Iran’s government cabinet has appointed Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani as foreign minister following the death of Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a helicopter crash.
The Iranian government announced on Monday the appointment of Ali Bagheri as Iran's foreign minister after the death of Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a helicopter crash in which he was traveling with President Ebrahim Raisi.
Abbas Araqchi, Ali Abolhassani, and Sayed Rasoul Mohajer were also appointed as advisors to the foreign minister.
Bagheri was the assistant to the late foreign minister for political affairs and served as Iran's chief nuclear negotiator.
He previously served as deputy secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council from 2007 to 2013.
He also headed Saeed Jalili's presidential campaign in the 2013 presidential election.
He is the son of Mohammad Bagher Bagheri, a former member of the Assembly of Experts, and the nephew of Mohammad Reza Mahdavi Kani.
He served as a key negotiator in mediating between Iran and the United States to finalize a deal for the release of American prisoners.
