The Central Bank of Iraq sent out a warning about phony dollar purchases on Wednesday.
"Fake pages on social networking sites bearing the names of licensed exchange companies that promote through social networking sites the sale in dollars at the official price," the Central Bank stated in a statement obtained by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), adding that "the fake pages give the victim instructions to deposit the dinar." Citizens enter the link for these fake companies in order to schedule an appointment for travelers to receive dollars.
"This type of service is obtained through electronic reservation on the company's official website (if any), and the deposit process takes place at the company's headquarters exclusively," according to a statement made by the Directorate of Supervision of Non-Banking Financial Institutions.
The Directorate stressed that "taking legal action against the owners of the fake pages of those companies" was part of its warning to those who wanted to purchase dollars at the official price. They needed to confirm and ensure the work of these licensed companies through the official website of the Iraqi Central Bank, which can be accessed at https://cbi.iq/page/25.
