Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani announced on Tuesday, three days of mourning for the victims of a run-over in Basra.
"The Governor of Basra, Asaad Abdul Amir Al-Eidani, announces a state of public mourning in the governorate for three days upon the souls of the students at Zainab Primary School who died as a result of an unfortunate over-run accident in Al-Haritha district," according to a statement by the governor's media center received by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.
The Ministry of Health confirmed earlier that the accident caused the death of 6 people and the injury of 10, according to a preliminary toll.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior confirmed “the driver of a refrigerator truck was arrested for running over 20 students in the incident, causing 6 deaths.”
In turn, the Ministry of Education stated, “The Minister of Education, Ibrahim Namis Al-Jubouri, offered his deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims of a hit-and-run accident,” declaring “mourning over the run-over accident.”
PM Muhammed S. Al-Sudani also directed to make a thorough investigation of the accident and all its circumstances, instructing to quickly provide aid and medical care to the wounded.
