The United Nations Mission confirmed on Friday that Iraq has made great strides to advance women's rights.
A statement from the mission received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) said: “On International Women’s Day, we unite to affirm our commitment to advancing the rights and empowerment of women and girls around the world. The slogan “Investing in Women to Accelerate the Pace of Progress” underscores the urgent need to address the ongoing challenges that hinder achieving gender justice.
“Women’s economic empowerment remains a fundamental goal in our pursuit of justice, and that secure income, access to adequate employment opportunities, and meaningful participation in decision-making processes is essential to creating a prosperous and just society. However, investment allocated to women globally it is not sufficient for the purpose, as the funding deficit necessary to meet the essential needs of women and girls amounts to about $360 billion.”
According to the statement, "In celebration of International Women's Day in Iraq, the National Department for Iraqi Women in the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, in cooperation with United Nations agencies, called on stakeholders in the Government of Iraq, representatives of the public and private sectors, civil society organizations, and international partners to strengthen our collective commitment to increasing funding allocated to women."
During the celebration, the achievements achieved in the field of women’s economic empowerment were reviewed, the main gaps were identified, and the path was charted towards achieving gender justice in all areas of life.
The statement concluded, "The United Nations agencies in Iraq stand ready to work with the Government of Iraq, the public and private sectors, and civil society organizations to accelerate progress towards a future in which every woman and girl can achieve their full potential."
