The agreement between the Iraqi and Jordanian sides to pursue drug traffickers who are wanted internationally was announced by the Ministry of Interior on Wednesday.
"Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari held a quadripartite meeting in Jordan with Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon related to the drug file, where it was agreed between the Iraqi and Jordanian sides to follow up on internationally wanted drug traffickers and all arrest warrants," stated the ministry's spokesman, Brigadier General Miqdad Miri, during a press conference held at the ministry and attended by the reporter of the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
"Last week, 26 life sentences and 11 death sentences were handed down to drug dealers," he continued, adding that "200,000 narcotic pills containing psychotropic substances and 250 kg of drugs were seized."
"The Joint Operations Command will continue the task of managing the security file in Iraq even if security responsibilities in the provinces are transferred to the Ministry of Interior," he said, adding, "We received the security file in the Samarra Operations Command, and we are preparing to receive the security file as well in the provinces of Diyala, Nineveh, Salah al-Din, and Anbar."
He made reference to "the activation of the radar system on the occasion of the Arbaeen pilgrimage from Iran's borders towards the holy city of Karbala."
Citing "the significant decline in the level of crime in Baghdad," he emphasized that "the ministry will not stop fighting corruption" and that 36,000 lawsuits had been referred to the courts.
