The Ministry of Trade, on Saturday, called on food merchants to take into consideration the purchasing power of Iraqi people, confirming the lifting of the import license restriction for essential materials needed by the citizens.
Ministry spokesman Muthanna al-Faraiji told The Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The Ministry of Trade is ready to go to interfere in the local markets to create a state of balance for any material in which there is an abnormal increase in the price,”," stressing that "the Ministry has lifted the restriction on import permits for l persons and companies wishing to import essential items needed by the citizen such as foodstuffs, construction materials, electrical materials or pharmaceuticals."
Al-Fariji added, “The Central Bank’s platform is also available to everyone for food importers, at the official price, and therefore the increase is unjustified and reflects a state of greed among some merchants.”
He called on "food merchants to take into account the purchasing power of Iraqis, and not to benefit twice, once from the difference of the dollar exchange rate, and also from selling the same item."
