Russia asked the United Nations Security Council to vote on Monday on a draft resolution related to the war between Israel and Palestinian Resistance in Gaza.
Moscow wants immediate humanitarian truce, while condemning violence against civilians, according to Russia’s Sputnik news agency.
Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations, said on Saturday that no amendments had been made to the text since it was presented to the council’s 15 members on Friday.
“We expect Brazil, which chairs the council, to confirm that the vote will take place soon,” Polyansky wrote on X, according to Sputnik.
Russia had earlier prepared a draft UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
The draft resolution expresses grave concern at the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, stresses the need to protect the Israeli and Palestinian civilian population, and calls for the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
The Russian draft condemns “all acts of violence against civilians and terrorist acts” and calls for the release of “all hostages,” referring to the Israelis captured by the Palestinian Resistance in the early hours of the Al-Aqsa Flood operation launched eight days ago.
Shortly after the distribution of his country’s draft resolution, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said that the indiscriminate shelling of residential areas in Gaza was unacceptable.
He added that the cutting of water and electricity to Gaza is reminiscent of the siege of the Russian city of Leningrad by Nazi forces during World War II.
Nebenzya said Israel had “the right to protect its citizens” and expressed Russia’s willingness to mediate in order to stop the fighting.
