Al-Sudani emphasizes the significance of the railway connection project for transporting travelers from Iran and Central Asian countries

    Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani attended on Saturday, the ceremony for laying the foundation stone for the railway connection project at the Shalamcheh border crossing in Basra Governorate. This project aims to facilitate transportation for travelers and pilgrims to the Holy Shrines between the Republic of Iraq and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The ceremony was attended by the Iranian First Vice President, Mr. Mohammad Mokhber.
     
    “In his speech during the ceremony, Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani welcomed the First Vice President of the Islamic Republic and his accompanying delegation. He expressed his appreciation for the Minister of Transport, the Governor of Basra, the advisors, and other officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the committees at other ministries for their exceptional efforts in advancing this significant project,” stated the Media Office of the Prime Minister in a statement, received by The Iraqi News Agency-INA.
     
     
    The statement added,"Prime Minister Al-Sudani emphasized the significance of the railway connection project for transporting travelers and pilgrims to the holy shrines from Iran and Central Asian countries. He also highlighted its role in bolstering Iraq's economic infrastructure and promoting growth. He mentioned that the project had undergone several years of negotiations and was approved by Iraq and Iran in 2021”.
     
    “Al-Sudani clarified that the railway connection through the Shalamcheh port is just one of several connections intended to transport travelers and pilgrims to the holy shrines, with plans to extend these connections to the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala in the future,” the statement continued.
     
    For his part, Mr. Mohammad Mokhber conveyed the greetings of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr. Ebrahim Raisi, to the Prime Minister, while also expressing appreciation for the development plans initiated by the Iraqi government across various sectors. He also reiterated Iran's support for Iraq's economic and developmental progress.
