Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi stressed on Saturday, the need to support women and place them on the priorities of the state's national agenda.

Al-Halbousi said, in his speech during a celebration on the occasion of the Islamic Day on combating Violence against Women in its 15th session, which was held by the National Hikma Movement in the capital, Baghdad, and was attended by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "It is a matter of reassurance that the violence against women is a reprehensible and disgraceful practice  our society looks at it with contempt and rejects that social media and the media have contributed to exposing the practices of violence against women and exposing the perpetrators."

He stressed that "the political, societal, religious and cultural forces in Iraq bear the responsibility of the union in confronting this phenomenon to provide support and assistance to the government so that it takes strong measures to enforce laws related to women's rights on the ground and work on drafting the necessary laws and amendments to enable them to perform their national duties."

Al-Halbousi added ,"parliament  is fully prepared to approve these legislations and amendments, which serve this goal and achieve the general interest of the individual and society."

He continued that "civil society institutions, ministries and government agencies specialized in the cultural, educational, artistic and media fields are called upon to promote awareness and education in society to confront behavior that perpetuates violence against women."
