Iraq: $68 million received within Sharm el-Sheikh conference

    INA - BAGHDAD 

    The Ministry of Environment announced on Wednesday, upon an agreement with developed countries to establish the Green Climate Fund for Losses and Damages, while noting that Iraq had received $68 million within Sharm el-Sheikh climate conference.

    "Iraq obtained an amount of $68 million within  Sharm El-Sheikh conference. The amount will contribute to presenting projects for various governorates related to food security, including  agricultural and water, as this has a great role, especially for the central and southern governorates," said the Director General of the Technical Department in the Ministry of Environment, Issa Al-Fayyad, to the Iraqi News Agency - INA.

    Al-Fayyad noted, "Negotiations conducted with developed countries were able to achieve a great achievement in addition to the Paris Agreement. The agreement stipulates that countries affected by climate change mention losses in their report and submit it internationally, while the negotiations reached an agreement to set up a special fund of Green Climate Fund for Losses and Damage."

    He pointed out that, "Iraq has suffered damage due to climate change, and developed countries must help to compensate it, especially since it is considered the fifth most fragile country in the world from climate changes. It is important to benefit from this support and present successful projects or proposals, especially for water projects, lining and clean energy use."

    "Iraq was able to obtain an amount of $68 million, of which $35 million and a half will be finalized, in addition to allocating Iraq an amount of $3 million, and therefore the amount will be $38 million and will be allocated for projects in the holy governorates of Karbala, Najaf and Muthanna," he clarified.
