The governor of Wasit Muhammad Al-Mayahi confirmed today, Friday, that the archaeological sites in Wasit need a real pause, and there are (450) of them that need rehabilitation.
Al-Mayahi told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The archaeological sites in Wasit are oppressed and need a real pause to rehabilitate them, as (450) archaeological and heritage sites need to be rehabilitated, including important sites of global interest.".
He added, "The governorate's capabilities are limited, and its role lies only in delivering basic services to archaeological sites.".
He pointed out, "The Ministry of Culture and Antiquities is concerned with rehabilitating archaeological sites in the governorate, and the process is specialized because it requires excavation teams and special tools, and the governorate cannot do it.".
Al-Mayahi stressed, "The local government in Wasit is ready to cooperate with the Ministry of Culture to make Wasit an archaeological and historical area with an important place in the field of tourism."
