The Ministry of Water Resources announced today, Tuesday, the start of pumping releases to raise the water level of the Tigris River, and while it indicated that measures had been taken to secure water access to four governorates, it confirmed that the negotiation file was sovereign and linked to the supreme authority of the state.
The ministry's spokesman, Khaled Shimal, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the issue of the water crisis is intertwined, and the largest part is within the external discussions," noting that "Minister of Water Resources Aoun Diab sent this picture to Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a Al-Sudani, who instructed to take all necessary measures to activate files of negotiation with Turkey, Iran and Syria.
Shimal added, "The ministry started yesterday to push water releases from the Dokan, Darbandikhan, and Mosul dams towards the Tigris River to raise the level of water," noting that "the ministry is continuing with a campaign to remove excesses and secure the releases and it arrival to the governorates of Basra, Maysan, Muthanna, and Dhi Qar."
"The water negotiation file is sovereign and linked to the supreme power of the state," pointing out that "it is wrong to imagine that the Ministry of Water Resources is the main body concerned with managing this file, but the Ministry of Water Resources manages the technical side of this file." Shimal said.
